Magic

'Magic'
21cm x 30cm
Coloured Pencil on Black Paper

This is my cat, Magic. It's the first time I've tried to draw her, and the reference photo I took was poor to say the least, but I quite like the result anyway. She's very black and if you photograph her all you get are those eyes, so it was a bit of a no-brainer to draw her on black paper. It's not the most detailed piece I've ever done but I think it captures her well enough.

Lovely work! She is like my dear departed Katie - a characterful cat.

Clever way to deal with the problem of black fur too - it is something that I never got to grips with painting. There are many times I wished for a more colourful cat.

Thanks Kari, this was a couple of firsts for me - both the subject and using black paper. Magic is beautiful but so black its hard to get a good photo of her. Maybe I'll try a different cat sometime (practically everyone I know has at least one)...

I think this is a great result!
Cats eyes are difficult to do, and I like the choice of black to work on.

I rarely work on black paper, perhaps because I'm a little afraid the result will look like one of those dreadful "elvis on velvet" paintings. Your cat, however, is beautiful. You've captured her expression perfectly.
