Virtual Sketch date - January

'Clementine 1'
21cm x 16cm
Watercolour and Coloured Pencil on Paper

Bit of a tough cookie this month's VSD, or so I thought anyway. This is actually version two, the first I messed the background up but liked the clementine itself. I'm still not really happy with this one but it's ok. There are some really great versions done by the other artists participating, definitely worth checking out, on the VSD blog page (where you can also see the original ref photo by Jeanette Jobson). There's also a Flickr page too.

I had a short lived abstract moment, which was fun and the result is quite attractive I think. I used masking fluid and watercolour. Abstract art doesn't really float my boat but I think it's worth doing something completely different occasionally.

These are both fabulous Andy! The first looks as if the flesh is sitting in an almost transparent skin.

The abstract look of the second is wonderful. I like it a lot. Thanks for taking part!

The blue background, shadows and peel on first one are perfect..

I like the abstract one better..

Both are lovely. I love the vibrancy of your pieces.

I like them both Andy. Were you masking your whites?, I can't tell. The abstract one is a great color study, if I was doing this one in class I would be getting my students to look for patterns in the white....could lead to a whole new project.

I absolutely love the abstract one. I am not usually a fan of abstract art either.

A really good job on a very tough subject. Nice and airy.

Two great entries Andy! The abstract really appeals to me, especially how the colors blend one into the next. Funny because I'm not typically an abstract fan either.

Thank you all for your comments. I found this quite a tricky reference but thats what is so good about the VSD, it gives you a push to try something new. Glad the abstract went down so well, it was just a bit of experimenting with masking fluid and watercolour :o)

Many thanks again for all the positive comments. Here's to next month!
